Synopsis
Tuesday will see the return of another short but potent Northwesterly blast. Showers will affect much of Scotland, particularly in the north and west, for much of the day. Above approximately 600 metres these showers are expected to be wintry. In the mountains it is also expected to be quite windy which may give temporary blizzard conditions in the heaviest of the showers. There have been reports of accumulations on the Cairngorms already during Monday, and further accumulations are possible, up to 4cm generally, and perhaps a little more on the peaks. Accumulations are not expected at lower levels. Elsewhere in the Southern Uplands, The Lake District, the northern Pennines and perhaps Snowdonia, any showers that occur may turn to sleet for a time over the tops of the mountains. Most levels will find any precipitation as rain, but sleet cannot be ruled out. The windchill effect will be another factor - strong winds will make it feel very cold, especially in the mountains where it may feel below 0C, so extra caution is strongly advised, especially as conditions underfoot could be very slippery. Widespread heavy showers with hail are expected in many northern areas during the day. Showers will continue in the areas mentioned above overnight.
