Synopsis
Tuesday sees the whole of the United Kingdom under an Arctic Airmass. Frequent snow showers will blow into Northern Scotland overnight, and by dawn gale-forece gusts of wind could provide blizzard conditions on the mountains and on Orkney & Shetland. Snow will fall to sea level and accumulate by dawn, although this is likely to melt during the day. A more organised area of sleet and snow spreads southeast across northern and then eastern Scotland during the afternoon, giving significant accumulations in places. Ice is likely to be a widespread problem. Scattered wintry showers are expected in Western Scotland throughout the day, providing a dusting in places. Northern Ireland will see frequent wintry showers, with snow mainly on hills, throughout the day although these should ease during the afternoon. A more organised area of wintry showers spreads southeast from NW England/N Wales during the morning into the Midlands by lunchtime. Snow will be mainly on high ground (such as Snowdon, Brecon & The Peaks), but as the afternoon wears on the rain may turn to sleet to lower levels - areas most favoured for this are the East Midlands (including Cambridgeshire & Bedfordshire) coinciding with the evening rush hour. Wet, slushy accumulations are possible on the Chilterns, Cotswolds and later the Downs perhaps. The rain, sleet and snow will clear the southeast around midnight, with accumulations unlikely. Frequent rain and hail showers are expected in the southwest, turning wintry across the Moors at times. Most showers will ease overnight, with the exception of northern Scotland. We will monitor the situation closely during Tuesday and may issue an update if necessary.
